I could be wrong.. it may not be dead.. it could be just dying. I am seeing less and less job adds asking for “x cert” as a requirement and seem to lean towards “must have experience/knowledge of x technology”. Interested in hearing opinions on this, might just be me who thinks this.

    Hi Juelz,

I've been active in recruitment a lot with my current employer in the last 5-7 years, primarily for entry-level 1st line positions. We don't specify any particular certs we're after, but more look at the overall "paper" qualifications and real world skills of applicants.

From there, I'll decide on whether to telephone interview, and if that's successful, progress to face to face, where we can really get a handle on applicants' skills.

So I would definitely not say certs/certifications are dead or dying. But if your prospective employer doesn't ask about them, are they really the employer for you?

I'm considering another post on this topic so on, but will need to reacquaint myself with this ol' place first... :)

I've gone for my ultimate job and await a decision. I needed a VCP 5 or 6 to meet the criteria so for me, very much alive, and I'll be updating my VMware certification. Time will tell if it's all been worth it but I really enjoyed my studies all the same

I think jobs are always going to be asking for experience in the advert even for entry level roles.

I think it depends what area of IT you are looking for jobs in many areas still require it, and also don't forget sometimes learning something new and challenging yourself to pass an exam is a good enough reason to gain certification.

Just to chip in again, I think Rob is spot on here. It does depend on the jobs you're going for. A lot of the time it's all about demonstrating you know your subject area, employers don't just have to take your word for it. Other times it helps an employer gain credibility by saying of our 2000 engineers, 1600 are vendor certified, increasing customer confidence that Microsoft and VMware etc agree, this person knows what we would expect them too. Finally and probably the most common, employers get a ton of CVs for any job these days, from first line to CxO. Certification is a legitimate way they can bin a number of these to get to a number that a hiring manager actually has time to read, 300 CVs would be a full time job to read for a week, 20 can be skimmed in two hours.

For Architects like me, in addition to experience of course which is always king, they add TOGAF as a way to filter us down. If you go for anything Amazon Web Services related, a huge growth area offering top dollar roles, almost all say "must be AWS certified"
