This is just censorship to stop critical thinking and real investigative journalism and free media.

They want to control the internet, like they control the mainstream media internationally.

 

For an example of what it means, Chinese memes are(were) very pun-based, because chinese is an exceedingly good language for punning with a long tradition of pun-based humor and it helped them get around pressure censorship software in the Great Firewall. In response China banned puns and wordplay, all of them, centuries of tradition be damned, because the memes could spread anti-party ideas.
